 DESMOND CARRICK RHA (1928-2012)

Desmond Carrick was born in Dublin in 1928. He worked in Guinness brewery from 1945-1977 pursuing his interest in art during the early years through classes at NCAD where Seán Keating and Maurice MacGonigal (both past presidents of the RHA) were his tutors.  Whilst working at in Guinness his talents as an artist were recognised by Bryan Guinness, later Lord Moyne and director of the brewing company who became a patron and Carrick was commissioned to paint a large mural depicting the brewing process for the company's visitor centre in 1958. Also in '58 he won the coveted Taylor Scholarship; a prize which facilitated a trip to Spain and ignited a lifelong passion for light and colour. He worked primarily in oils and watercolours producing many vibrant Landscapes

In 1968, he was elected a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts in Ireland and became one of the institution's most eminent members. For forty-four years his paintings were a familiar sight on the academy walls.  He played a crucial role in facilitating the transformation of the old academy site into the modern space it is today.

In 2009 Gandon Editions published a profusely illustrated book on Carrick's life and career, "The Lie of the Land". Desmond Carrick's paintings form an important part of many public and private collections worldwide.
